My Grateful Dead Experience Part 2 – Furthur’s 2011 New Years Run at the Bill Graham Civic

Greetings everyone, and welcome to my personal tour and personal account inside the red carpet and arenas of some of the coolest entertainment events in California. This edition of “The Outsiders Guide To the Inside of Hollywood”, is part two of my personal experience as a Deadhead. Here is the link to part 1: http://wp.me/p1tOW9-2V

Back in the Grateful Dead days, I always wanted to attend a complete run of shows. But due to school or money issues, I could only attend a few. For my non Deadheads, you might be wondering why I would want to see a band on multiple nights in the same city. The Dead, Furthur, and other members were always known for playing different songs and different shows each night. Each show was always a different experience. So my plan for 2011, was to attend all three shows at the Bill Graham Civic, hoping to take a trip to “Terrapin Station”.

12/29/11 Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – Night #1

I got to the Bill Graham Civic, early and walked around the Capital Building, which was still covered in it’s Holiday green and red lights. Across the street from the Capital in the park across from the Bill Graham, was the large gathering of Deadheads, of all ages gathered in an area called “Shakedown Street”. This was the one thing that always stood out no mater, if it was a Grateful Dead, Other Ones, Phil and Friends, Ratdog, The Dead, and Furthur shows. It’s what makes a Dead show special and unlike another live concert experience old and new. This is not a review about how and what they play, this is more of the Deadhead Experience than a detailed review. That being said, all of the shows were fantastic but, I felt that this was my favorite night for several reasons.

Originally, I thought this would be the more mellow holding a little back for the next 2 nights, and 5 sets of music to be played at the historic venue. The band opened with a 4:39 second jam into Help On The Way, followed by Deadhead favorites, Slipknot! Estimated Prophet (with the crowd at it’s loudest point at “California”),  Brown Eyed Women, Cassidy, and Tennessee Jed. The bands energy was matched by the crowd, who sang along to every word while dancing.

The second set kicked off with Box of Rain, Big Bad Blues, China Cat Sunflower > Scarlet Begonias, Truckin, and more favorites before the band closed with Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Right Now Baby Blue”. I was about 25 feet from the Bob / Phil area on the floor. I met a lot of interesting Deadheads from all parts of the country. Some of the parents who brought their kids with them to shows when they were young were now bringing their teenage friends with them. One family I met had brought members from three different generations. The dedication of their fans, is one reason I feel makes the Furthur experience so great. I was stoked to be going to the show on the 30th and hoping to find a ticket for NYE.

12/30/11 Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – Night #2

I got to the venue tonight to try and get a closer spot on the floor. My body feeling not only my age, but my mobility problems. I still managed to get a good spot between John and Bob. I couldn’t imagine what the first set was going to be like after last night. Once again the band started off on fire. opening up with a song they teased the night before. “Jack Straw”, was followed by, Bertha, Eyes of the World, Music Never Stopped, the set was closed out with a rocking “deal” that had the crowd of all ages clapping their hands and singing along.

My second set highlight happened right at the beginning. The band opened with the Traffic classic “Dear Mr. Fantasy”, a song I had not heard since Jerry played it with Traffic at their Giant Stadium concert in 94. “Wharf Rat”, another one of my favorite songs was performed like it was the 70’s with the band hitting and holding high notes, that made me feel like I went into a Grateful Dead Time Machine and I was transported to the 70’s. The night closed with the radio friendly “Touch Of Grey” which once again, had the crowd of all ages singing along.

The crowd was once again diverse and fun. I met with, a new kind of Deadhead. A twenty something fan, had brought another friend with him. He was trying to explain the history and post history of the Grateful Dead. Trying to analyze the different people and bands. It was clear that he was the type of person who was raised by the internet, quoting stat’s and shows he probably illegally downloaded using some kind of software. He called Phil a National Treasure and spoke like he was a Steve Jobs Head, as he kept social media posting every song the band was playing. I though to myself what a long way we have come from the days of writing the set songs on  a napkin and comparing notes after a show.

12/31/11 Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – Night #3 -NYE Year of  the Dragon

After unsuccessfully trying for press credentials again and waiting for Ticketmaster to release tickets, I ended up paying a little extra for the NYE show. I thought to myself this blog could not be complete without attending the NYE show my first one since 12/31/09. Besides I still had not heard my all time favorite dead song “Terrapin Station”.  I got to the venue earlier and was happy to find the last Handicap spot (only good thing about having mobility problems) by City Hall. I skipped “Shakedown Street”, to get on the already long line.  Feeling all “Tangled Up and Blue”, I was hoping to get a seat on the reserved level. As I was on line I had a lot of people commenting on my shirt from the 90’s. I really felt old meeting all these kids who were experiencing their first shows acting like the 90’s were the glory years. I told them how good Furthur was and at times when I closed my eyes I felt like I was hearing Jerry Garcia.

When the doors finally opened I got upstairs only to find people saving seats for friends who were outside and not even at the venue yet. I headed back to the floor knowing that the real experience is being surround by many people instead of the same few. I ended up between Bob and Phil about 25 feet from the stage. I knew the sound would be great here, and it was. The show began with the Midnight song I heard in 2009, Golden Road (to Unlimited Devotion), with the crowded singing along to the chorus. It was followed by Cosmic Charlie, Althea, Next Time You See Me, and High Time. It had the feeling of a Sunday night show, until the crowded pleaser Shakedown Street.

The second of three sets that night went back into the mellow groove feeling with Morning Dew followed by a trippy Dark Star. The show picked up and transformed into a Saturday night show with I Know You Rider, St. Stephen and Fire on the Mountain and everyone dancing to close out 2011.

Since I got inside the venue I was staring up at the balloons that were about to fall on me at midnight. I had also seen what looked to be a mechanical dragon hanging from the ceiling at the Bill Graham. As it got closer to midnight the dragon started to make noise.

I ran into another group of teenagers who were from The East Coast and Colorado. The teens kept asking me of what it was like back in the Grateful Dead days.  They then wanted me to dose with them, I politely laughed and told them that once you get to my age you have these things called panic attacks. Later on one of the girls, started to fall down in the middle of dancing, luckily I was able to catch her before she hit the concrete floor.

The dragon started to head for the stage and the speakers started playing the Rolling Stones “Start me Up” as a petty blonde was riding the dragon to the stage. As the countdown started NBA legend and the worlds tallest deadhead Bill Walton played the role of “Father Time”. Walton stayed on the stage to hug many of the Furthur members and danced along to “Sugar Magnolia”. The rest of the set was on fire with other tunes like “Playing in the Band” and” Uncle John’s Band” “The Wheel”, and back into “Playing” to close out the set. When the band came back to my personal delight they started to play  a 26 minute version of “Terrapin Station”. What more could I have asked for. As I left I saw some of the new friends I had met over the past three nights, and thought to myself “What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been”. Guys “Thank You For A Real Good Time”. Death Cab For Cutie Play For The Kids and My Thoughts on the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees, and the Golden Globe Nominations

Greetings and Happy Holidays everyone! Welcome to my final entertainment event blog of 2011. This trip into “The Outsiders Guide To The Inside Of Hollywood” took us back to San Francisco to attend a Classic Rock radio station KFOG’s Concert for Kids a benefit for the Marines’ Toys for Tots and Children of Shelters. I also will share my thoughts on the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2012, and the Golden Globe Nominations.

KFOG Concert for Kids: Death Cab for Cutie & The Toxic Airborne Event

My first thought when I first heard that Death Cab For Cutie, was headlining the KFOG Concert For Kids, was stoked that the band would play a close to full set instead of a half a dozen songs. I had seen the band at a number of KROQ Events in Los Angeles. Due to the size of the last two DCFC shows in the bay area (Oakland Arena & Treasure Island Music Festival), I was overjoyed at being at a small venue like the Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium, in San Francisco. Parking was a nightmare and cost more than some of the ticket prices, but the chance to see DCFC , in this venue made it all worth it.

When I entered the hall we were greeted by US Marines collecting toys for toy’s For Tot’s. http://www.toysfortots.org/ The fact that not only, were these servicemen protecting our nation but take the time so less fortunate kids could take part in the holiday season was touching. Concert goers took pictures of and with the Marines like they would of a celebrity.

The concert started with a 30 minute set from the Los Feliz, Los Angeles band Airborne Toxic Event. http://www.theairbornetoxicevent.com I have to admit when this band first broke out in 2008 with their hit single “Sometime Around Midnight” I wasn’t their biggest fan. However, after seeing them play live at Live 105’s BFD this year they won we over. They are definitely one of those bands that you have to experience live. They played a mix of songs from their self titled debut CD and songs from their latest “All At Once”

After a quick intermission Death Cab For Cutie hit the stage. The most interesting thing was that DCFC were playing a Classic Rock stations show with no hipsters. The crowd age range went from 15+ to over 50+. The band took to the stage with their usual dark lighting, which was perfect for this theatre. Singer Ben Gibbard, who just separated from singer/ actress Zooey Deschanel was sporting a new beard with his usual concert attire. The band played a number of songs off it’s latest CD “Codes and Keys” along with radio station favorites. They also went deep into their past showcasing some of their earlier work. My highlights were “The sound of Settling”, “The New Year”, “Crooked Teeth”, Ben on drums, during “We Looked Like Giants”, and the set closing “Transatlanticism”. The band seemed happy to play for such a good cause. My only disappointment being a former New Yorker, I really wanted to hear “ Marching Bands of Manhattan”. DCFC proved once again, that they are one of the best live bands around. http://www.deathcabforcutie.com/

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2012

By now you probably already know who and who didn’t make the list. If not here are the members of the Class of 2012″ Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees” http://rockhall.com/blog/post/6990_2012-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-inductees/ Congratulations to everyone! I’m going to speak about two of the bands that will be inducted that I feel the strongest personal connection to.

Guns N’ Roses Live – Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY -6-17-1991

10 P.M. it’s been over 90 minutes since opening act Skid row left the stage. Rumors start to circulate around the suburban Long Island arena, that they are not coming. As some of the less die hard fans,  start to leave the TV monitors start to show pretty girls from the audience. What started out as a Candid moment turned into an old fashion Times Square Peep show with the girls flashing the cameras.

10:45 still no sound from the stage. Finally an announcement is made that” Guns N’ Roses” were boarding a helicopter and would be there ASAP! At this point the crowd freaked out and caused thousands of dollars of damage to the venues male restrooms. It was my first concert riot!

A little bit after 11 the band hit the stage with a 3 hour set of some of the most intense music live I’ve ever witnessed live. After the second song Mr. Brownstone, Axl Rose addressed the crowd “ Geffen is pestering GN’R to release the new album (UYI) A.S.A.P. Axl also tells the crowd to steal the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine with them on the cover. The band who is always known for being late this time tried to give a reason. They blamed Rolling Stone Magazine, saying “You can never just come to New York”, he then went on to the his fans not to buy but tells the crowd to steal the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine with them on the cover.

The fact is that I saw the band perform on many occasions including the first show with out Izzy Stradlin in 92. I also witnessed the begging of the end after the band was out played by Metallica on their Co Healing Tour in 1992. When the band split it broke my heart along with millions. GNR, is Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, and Duff McKagan.

In 2006 I saw Guns N’ Roses Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Studios. The surprise guest that night was former guitarist Izzy Stradlin, I though to myself I’d love to see the entire band together for the 2012 Hall Of Fame ceremony. Axl, Slash, Izzy, and Duff (now opening for the current line up of GNR), need to put their “Guns ‘N Ego’s” down and put back together one of the Greatest American bands ever! Even if it’s just for one night!

Red Hot Chili Peppers live at The Ritz (originally Studio 54) in New York City April 1990.

I can remember driving with my friend, on the Hutchinson Parkway,  listening to legendary rock station 102.7 WNEW, when all the sudden, we heard a familiar baseline. It was “The Red Hot Chili Peppers”, covering Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground”. Months after first hearing about the band I’d already seen them. we were so excited and sad to hear them on the radio. We knew that the days of seeing them live in small clubs would soon be over. Their current CD “Mother’s milk” was unlike any other CD I ever heard. My first Chili Peppers show was at the original site of Studio 54. This was also my first introduction to a Mosh Pit.  After getting crushed in the pit I was now being pushed into the stage, as I tried to get up RHCP, Basist Flea, thought I was trying to stage dive and pushed me back into the pit, as they went into a song called “Knock Me Down”. Next thing I knew I heard Jimmy Hendrix’s Castles playing in the background (turned out to be the RHCP Encore). I couldn’t believe how much energy they had and continue to have to this day. After seeing singer Anthony Kiedis, at his best and worst live, over the last 20 years, I’m happy to see him conquering some of his demons and wish him the best in what must be a daily battle. Last year I photographed then met the band and shared some of my memories with them. Looking forward to seeing them on stage again in 2012.

As I once again, congratulate all the inductees, it makes me sad to see some of the groups and singers who still are awaiting the honor. The band I most want to see inducted in 2013 is Canadian trio “Rush”. I can’t believe that a band that is so talented and was always far ahead of their times is not in the Hall Of Fame. Forget about the 22 Gold records they have been selling out 18,000 seat venues since the 70’s. Shame on you Hall Of Fame Voters! http://www.petitiononline.com/xanstar/petition.html

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Nomoinations

The 2012 Golden Globe nominations came out today. Here is a list of them: http://www.goldenglobes.org/blog/2011/12/the-69th-annual-golden-globe-awards-nominations/ . I’ll go into much greater details on this as the ceremony gets closer. I actually think, that the Hollywood Foreign Press, did a good job on this years nominations. I have had the privilege of photographing a number of the nominees, and even worked on one of the film (Moneyball) as an extra. I was really happy to see Moneyball and it’s cast get a nomination. I also am really happy for Jessica Chastain, who I thought would have been nominated for “The Debt” or “Tree Of Life”, but she did do a fabulous job in “The Help”. Speaking of “The Help” (my personal favorite of 2011), I was glad to see it wasn’t forgotten several months after the film left theaters.

This is one year I wouldn’t want to have to be a voter. I have not seen “The Artist”, but it was the film most talked about at The Mill Valley Film Festival and AFI Fest, that I covered last Fall. Hard to believe that a black and white silent film would be so talked about in 2011, but it was. The year also saw the return of  Woody Allen to Award Season.

As for the TV part of the Globes, Zooey Deschanel and “New Girl” could possibly be a surprise on Globes night, with old favorites showing up in categories with new ones. The Golden Globes will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2012. I’ll have a lot more to say about this after seeing all the films. I encourage you to do the same!

“New Year’s Eve” Los Angeles Premiere Grauman’s Chinese Theatre 12/5

“New Year’s Eve” The Film, was celebrated early in Los Angeles last week with one of the largest premiere’s of the year. Most of the cast of Garry Marshall’s, star filled ensemble cast was on hand to walk the carpet for the films Los Angeles Premiere. When I first heard about the film I assumed it would premiere, in New York City, so I  eagerly applied early through my agency PR Photos upon hearing that it would premiere, at the Chinese theatre in Los Angeles. A week before the film (most studios don’t confirm till 48-24 hours before the event) was to premiere, I got an email confirmation, filled with instructions. I had already thought that it was going to be a madhouse but after reading the email that sounded like an understatement.

As I got to Hollywood Boulevard, I thought to myself at least I was at the Chinese Theatre, my home turf. Not only, was I returning to the place where I started taking celebrity photography, and lived down the street from the famous boulevard for a decade, I also worked for over two years for a company across from the Scientology center. Normally for the chinese theatre we would meet in a certain area. When I got there it was a scene like New Years Eve in New York City. There were fans and barracks everywhere.  When they finally opened up a gate there was a rush of photographers moving forward that reminded we of when doors open at a general admission rock concert. I must say Warner Brothers staff did an excellent job organizing the call list. The only problem was there too many people from multiple organizations and people who normally didn’t cover events. Thankfully I brought my two step step stool and placed it in the second row were I started to stet up. The carpet was overbooked but luckily I had my spot and not in a third row.

Director  Gary Marshall was the first to arrive followed by Abigail Breslin, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Sofia Vergara, Jake T. Austin, and Joey McIntyre. My highlights were Katherine Heigl, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Hilary Swank who all looked stunning. The stars of the carpet appeared to be the newly single Ashton Kutcher and Glee star Lea Michele who were very playful and candid on the carpet. The Star Couple Award of the Night went to Husband and Wife Josh Duhamel and Fergie: http://www.sawfnews.com/Fashion/68007.aspx

The shoot was a tough one due to my spot and lighting. But I did manage to get some more credits and even had my picture featured over photographers who  have been shooting for years. Score another for the ultimate underdog.

I also saw the film this weekend and was pleasantly surprised how much it touched me. Growing up in Yonkers, New York I spent many nights in the city and in Times Square. I really felt the film worked a lot better than Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day”. It’s not going to be an award winning film but it touched me and reminded me just how there is not city like NYC on New Years Eve. I encourage you to see the film and judge for yourself. www.newyearseve-movie.com

Actors, Film Makers, and Film Fans Occupy Hollywood Boulevard for AFI FEST 2011

Greetings everyone and welcome to this months trip inside the barracks of some of Hollywoods hottest events. Today, “The Outsiders Guide To The Inside Of Hollywood” takes you on a trip on the red carpet and inside the theaters of AFI FEST 2011. For the past two years I attended the opening night film of AFI FEST as a guest. This year I originally I thought  I was going to be attending the 25th Anniversary of AFI FEST as a member of the AFI Film Institute. As I did the previous year,  I had applied for press credentials for the 2011 Festival but figured I’d end up attending as a guest again. To my pleasant surprise I  was confirmed for Opening Night Gala Screening of “J. Edgar”. During the 2011 festival I ended up covering 5 Red Carpets and attended 6 movie premiere’s. The following are some of my highlights from the festival.

AFI FEST 2011 – Opening Night Gala Screening of “J. Edgar”

As I got to the Chinese Theatre, I started to remember that the first film I ever saw there in 1997, was “Titanic”. I was really stoked to be able to cross Leonardo DiCaprio,  off my list of celebrities haven’t I photographed. Though I never was as big as a fan of his, as it was in my sisters case, I’ve always respected and admired his diverse acting roles he takes on. He truly has grown into one of our finest actors of the 30 something generation. He shows it in a memorable performance in “J.  Edgar”.

The carpet was packed body to body. I started to feel like I was back in Oakland, in the pit at last months “Foo Fighter” show. I finally found a place on the end next to the “Entertainment Tonight’s  crew. In the beginning the spot was a good one, but as the carpet got as crowded as an LA Freeway I ended up having to change what I shot. I ended up right next to the E.T. reporter and took some shots without my flash of Leo and Clint being interviewed. Leonardo, was nice enough to turn around and let me get one shot up close.

The film J. Edgar is director Clint Eastwood’s look inside the personal life of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. Mr. Eastwood does an amazing job directing this biopic. Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Watts give award winning performances as they literally age right in front of you during the picture. The actor who ended up surprising me the most was 26 year old Armie Hammer who is best known as playing the double role of the Winklevoss twins in “The Social Network”. Hammer who plays Clyde Tolson, Hoover’s associate director at the FBI. He was also Hoover’s life long love. The film does an excellent job of hinting about that though only a kiss is ever shown.  http://jedgarmovie.warnerbros.com/index.html

AFI FEST “The Lady” Special Screening

Driving down Mullholland I saw a large black cloud hanging over Hollywood. My first thought is my camera was going to get wet and I’d be out of luck for the next several events I was covering. I parked my car and continued down the Boulevard as the rain started to come down. I bought an umbrella and used it to shield my camera. The rain was too heavy for the umbrella and it literately broke within minutes. I used what was left of the umbrella , to protect the camera. As I finally make to the shelter of the Chinese theatre to check in.

“The Lady”,  relives the story of pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) and the academic and writer Michael Aris ( David Thewlls). Michelle looked truly beautiful on the carpet. From what I’ve heard she should be making a number of carpet appearances during Award Season. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1802197/

Los Angeles Times Young Hollywood Roundtable with Armie Hammer, Anton Yelchin, Evan Rachel Wood and Kirsten Dunst.

After “The Lady” carpet ended, I was able to stay at the theatre and catch a photo op with Armie Hammer, Anton Yelchin, Evan Rachel Wood and Kirsten Dunst coming back from a LA Times Young Hollywood Roundtable. Armie (who I just photographed at J. Edgar) posed with a confident look. This was also my second time photographing  “Like Crazy” star Anton Yelchin, who walked the carpet and signed autographs and took some pictures with fans. Kirsten Dunst looked fabulous in a black leather dress. Evan Rachel Wood ended up being the bell of the carpet bringing,  Old School Hollywood style, went for full-on retro chic in a virgin wool dress by designer Christian Dior.

Carnage and Rampart Premiere’s at The Chinese Theatre

On November 6,  I attended my first AFI FEST screenings of the festival. The first film I saw was the new Roman Polanski film with Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet,  John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. “Carnage “ Tells the story of two sets of parents who decide to have a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a schoolyard brawl. The Film is based on the play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. The film’s acting directing, and writing made it unlike many films I’ve ever seen. It was great seeing Reily and Waltz at the introduction to the film. I was blown away by their performances along with the women.

The second movie of the night at the famous Chinese theatre was “Rampart”, a drama film released in 2011. It is being directed by Oren Moverman and stars, Woody Harrelson as Dave Brown. The film is a police drama relating to the Rampart scandal of the 1990’s. The movie is powerful and shows you not only the affect of his actions on himself but in the two separate families he had. Robin Wright also turns in an amazing performance. Both actors were in attendance for the screening.

AFI FEST 2011 – “The Artist” Special Screening – Arrivals

After a night attending the festival then covering the “Jack and Jill” Premiere, in Westwood, I was back on the carpet at the festival. Tonight’s film was one of the most talked about. “ The artist” just came off from winning festivals top prize at The Mill Valley and Hampton film festivals. I was surprised that there was only half as much press as other events. “The Artist” is a a silent film and in black-and-white. The film is from French Director, Michel Hazanavicius. French actor Jean Dujardin who won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes film festival posed with cast and even Uggie the dog from the film.  Penelope Ann Miller looked stunning in a red dress. It was also great seeing acting legends James Cromwell and Malcolm McDowell walk the red carpet. Unfortunately by the time I got off the carpet and on the line the theater was full. Like Mill Valley the AFI members all praised the film. Lucky for us it will be opening soon. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1655442/

“Jeff Who Lives At Home” and Attenberg” Screenings

This was another day that I was going to be attending the festival as a guest. I’d had planned on catching two very different films I missed at The Mill Valley Film Festival. “Jeff Who Lives at Home”. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588334/ and Athina Rachel Tsangari film Attenberg. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1691323/

“Jeff Who Lives at Home” starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, directed and written by Jay and Mark Duplass and co-starring Susan Sarandon. From the title and the premiss it appears to be a stoner film. The movie is everything but. The film tells the story of a disconnected family trying to find meaning and an importance in their life. I really enjoyed the film and recommend the film to all.

“Attenberg” writer director Athina Rachel Tsangari Greece’s official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards 2012. Tells the story of a girl coming to terns with her sexuality while her father is dying from cancer. It follows her through her relationships with her female best friend and man she randomly meets. Found the film funny at times even though the subject matter may not be. Director did am amazing job with so me difficult scenes.

“We Need to Talk About Kevin” Screening – Arrivals and Q & A

I knew this would be my most difficult film to watch. I heard a lot of people talking about this film at the Mill Valley Film Festival. I had the privilege of photographing Ezra Miller, at a screening and reception, so I was really looking forward to seeing the film.

The film is based on the novel by Lionel Shriver, about a fictional school massacre. It is written from the perspective of the killer’s mother, Eva, and documents her attempt to come to terms with her son Kevin and the murders he committed. The direction is also done in the mothers perspective. The directing shows us without actually showing us the brutal images. Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, and  Ezra Miller give chilling performances. Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly, took part in a Q& A after the film. They also hung out in the lobby and said hi to friends and fans. It’s always intriguing to hear the story behind the story. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242460/

The festival closed the following night,  with the North American premiere of  “the adventures of Tintin”.  directed by Steven Spielberg. I’d like to thank Shivna Vasavada and her staff and all the volunteers that made AFI FEST 2011 such a blast to cover and attend.  Can’t wait till AFI FEST 2012!

Stars Shine Bright at the 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival – Part 2

“My Week with Marilyn” & Screening and Q & A

Greetings everyone and welcome to part 2 of my experience this year at the 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival. As the festival hit it’s mid point by no means, did it slow down. Originally, when I first saw the list of movies for this year’s festival one film got my attention immediately. “My Week with Marilyn” an upcoming British drama film directed by Simon Curtis and stars Michelle Williams, as the starlet Marilyn Monroe. The film focuses on an assistant to the director on the British set of “The Prince and the Showgirl” which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. I got to the theatre and was able to get some pictures of the director Simon Curtis. He introduced the move and returned for a Q & A. I had the feeling that Williams, would look the part but I wondered how else she would transform herself into Marilyn. She ended up amazing me, not just with her look or her dialogue but her facial and body expressions. I truly felt that I was transformed back to 1957. The other thing that surprised me was not the amazing acting or directing but how good and at times funny the screenplay was. This movie is a must see when it comes to your town in the next few weeks. http://myweekwithmarilynmovie.com/

Spotlight on Ezra Miller – “We Need to Talk About Kevin”

This was one of the Mill Valley Film Festivals  Spotlights with up and coming actor Ezra Miller (City Island & Californication) and a screening for with highly talked about film “We Need to Talk About Kevin”. The film is based on a novel about The mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief — and feelings of responsibility for her child’s actions by writing to her estranged husband. I ended up needing to cover another film “Miss Bala” and did not get to see the film. From what I hear it was emotionally powerful and I’m looking forward to seeing it when it comes out. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242460/

“ Miss Bala” Screening & Q & A with Director Gerardo Naranjo

This was another unplanned photo assignment originally. As I got to the theater in Mill Valley, I took sometime looking the film up on the internet. I saw that “Miss Bala” was going to be Mexico’s selection for the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. “Miss Bala”, was written and directed by Gerardo Naranjo. The film tells the story of a a Baja California beauty queen caught up in a maddening cycle of drug cartel violence in Tijuana. I’m going to be checking this film out at AFI Fest next month.

“A Few Best Men” World Premiere Screening & Q & A

This was suppose to be a special premiere, but ended up actually being the World Premiere of the Australia film “A Few Best Men” the latest film from director Stephan Elliott ( The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert). The film stars Xavier Samuel as the soon to be married groom who goes to Australia with his three best friends and best men for the wedding. His soon to be Mother in-law is played by Olivia Newton John (Grease), who gives her funniest performance of her career. She almost steals the movie with her performance. The films co star Kris Marshall (Love Actually) also gives a hilarious performance. Marshall and director Stephan Elliott attended the premiere at the Rafael. The staff of the Mill Valley Film Festival did a wonderful job setting everything up and created a great atmosphere for the premiere. The film is written (Dean Craig), directed, and acted magnificently. This was my biggest surprise at the film festival. http://www.afewbestmenthemovie.com/

Spotlight on Elizabeth Olsen “Martha Marcy May Marlene” Screening & Q & A

The other film and spotlight I was eagerly waiting for was the festivals Spotlight on Elizabeth Olsen  who in only her “Martha Marcy May Marlene”. Olsen now 22, made her acting debut at 4 in a film with her sisters (Mary Kate and Ashley), has 3 soon to be released films, in the near future. “ Martha Marcy May Marlene” is in limited release and will be coming to more cities soon.  The film is about a young woman who escapes a cult leader played by Oscar Nominee John Hawkes ,(who was also in attendance at the Rafael) and tries to readjust to life living with her sister and brother in-law. I covered Elizabeth’s Red Carpet arrival. She looked stunning and looked like she had been doing Red Carpets for years.

I ended up getting a tip, from a festival person that Grateful Dead & Furthur member Bob Weir , was doing a guest performance at a benefit. The Play Like a Lion Live: Benefit concert honoring Ali Akbar Khan at the  Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. Being the Deadhead I am, I missed the film and
Q & A to see the concert.

I did see “Martha Marcy May Marlene” opening day in San Francisco, at the Kabuki Theatre. Elizabeth, gives an amazing performance. Like Close and Williams performances, her facial and body movements are of an actor, far past her years and experience. I’m hoping to see all three women get nominations this Awards Season. I feel that Miss Olsen, is going to be one of the leading actors, for years to come.

Closing Night Part of the 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival –  San Rafael Community Center

After 11 wonderful days this years festival ended with a screening and a
Q & A, of the much talked about French Writer/Director Michel Hazanavicius  “The Artist”. The film has already gotten Oscar buzz and won the Audience Favorite Award of the Year.  More winners from the festival can be found here: http://www.mvff.com/ I’ll be at the Los Angeles Premiere screening of the film, as part of the 2011 AFI Fest in Los Angeles next week.

The festival closed with a fun and entertaining evening at the San Rafael Community Center. Festival members shared drinks, food, and conversation with filmmakers and the staff and volunteers of the festival. The entertainment for the night was provided by Los Angeles band The dAKAH Symphonic Hip Hop Orchestra had the guests dancing and clapping their hands. It was a real nice diverse way to close out a festival that had such diversity in it. Once again, the Mill Valley Film Festival not only picked amazing films but with their Q & A’s, Panels, Spotlights, and tributes they give you an inside look to what film making is all about.

I want to thank Mark Fishkin, Zoë Elton, Kevin Heverin, Richard Peterson, Jeromy Zajonc, Natalie Martens, all the volunteers, and the staff of the California Film Institute. The Institute has  screenings and special guest all year long. For more information and to become a member of the California Film Institute go to: http://www.cafilm.org/index.html

Thanks for joining me me for this edition of “The Outsiders Guide to the Inside of Hollywood”. I’ll be in LA next week to attend AFI Fest 2011 and also will be covering 2 major studio movie Red Carpet premiere’s.

Stars Shine Bright at the 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival – Part 1

Greetings everyone and welcome to this edition of “The Outsiders Guide To the Inside of Hollywood”, is solely about one of my favorite film festivals the 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival. Last year as some of you know, I attended last years festival as a patron and got to meet James Franco and be one of the first people in California to screen “127 Hours”. I also got to ask Annette Bening a question at a Q & A during her Tribute. What I love so much about this festival, besides their always amazing lineup are there Q & A, spotlights and other various tributes. You really get the learn the story behind film making.

In March of last year,  I started to do events with the California Film Institute, based in San Rafael.  So when it came time to apply for credentials this year I was hoping to be able to cover a number of events. With help from the Marketing and
Communications Manager my credential request was approved.

34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival – Opening Night “Albert Nobb’s” Screening and Q & A with Glenn Close

Originally I had won tickets to one of the opening night films “Jeff Who Lives At Home”, but was asked the day before about covering a Q & A and screening of the film “Albert Nobbs” with Glenn Close. Even though i wanted to see the other film, I knew that Glenn could possibly be nominated for several awards this year from the buzz I had already heard about the film. I got to the theater and saw lines of people waiting for different screenings. I found my way to the check in area in the space that was converted to a lounge for the festival. Because the California Film Institute is a Non profit a lot of people there are volunteers. The festival also has many films playing in different theaters and in this case different cities. I met my contact person who was at one of the other locations. I was told to wait out in front for Glenn who would be arriving shortly. I got to the location and was joined by another young photographer. After a few minutes we saw the drop off car arrive. There were a number of people waiting to go into a movie who also saw this. As the area got more crowded a few autograph seekers showed up. Then as the car was about to stop in front of the theater it kept going. Feeling like we just been “Punked “, we realized she was going in through a private area. We then went inside where Glenn was standing outside the doors to the theater. Her publicist informed us that there were too many photos at a reception before and we could only shoot a few from the Q & A. Disappointed but figuring out something was better than nothing I proceeded to do that. I’ve worked for and was even a child actor, so I know how draining that can be when your going from one event to the other in possibly even different countries at one time. The film was really well acted and directed and in my opinion will get Glenn her 6th Oscar Nomination. Her transformation into the character was amazing and reminded me of “Victor Victoria”. http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1358863897/

After the film I headed to the opening night party at the Mill Valley Community Center. Really liked this venue and had a great time meeting and photographing the guests.

Tribute to Glenn Close & “Like Crazy” Screening & Q & A

My assignment on night 2 of the festival was a “Like Crazy” screening with the director Drake Doremus and stars Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones. About 2 hours before my call time I was asked if I wanted to cover the Glenn Close Tribute Red Carpet in San Rafael before going to Mill Valley for the “Just Crazy” Q & A. Knowing that the shots I got of Glenn the previous night weren’t good enough I was stoked to be able to do both. Glenn looked amazing on the carpet. I then ran back to mill Valley and was able to cover the  Q & A,  and got exclusive shots with Anton and Felicity both looked stunning. I have a strong feeling we will be seeing a lot more from both these actors in the future. looking forward to seeing it when it comes out next month. http://www.likecrazy.com/

New Movies Lab Active Cinema: Can A Movie Make A Difference – Panel & “The Real Rocky” & “Right To Play” Screenings

A day after driving to Monterey, to register voters at a Furthur concert for http://www.headcount.org, and even without sleep, I was ready for day 3 of the festival. I was covering two sports documentaries from ESPN’s 30 for 3o series. As I got to the theater and went in the lounge I was asked to take pictures of New Movies Lab Active Cinema: Can A Movie Make A Difference – Panel, with a number of Industry professions including “The Lady” star Michelle Yeoh. During the first film right to play I saw a staff member looking for someone in the theater. thinking it might be me I looked at the person. She wanted me to go back upstairs and take some shots after the panel was done. I ended up getting some close ups and ran into an elderly husband and wife who I met at last years festival. It was a nice moment they were excited to see that I was an official photographer with the festival this year. After these shoots I ran into my car and drove to Mountain View to photograph an Incubus concert.

Raiders of the Lost Ark 30th Anniversary Screening

This event was a lot of fun. Seeing all the parents taking their kids to see the film for the first time on the big screen, made me remember when I first saw the film in Yonkers as a kid. members of the Institute dressed up like characters from the film. A costume contest for all ages and a trivia contest were help before the screening. After the screening there was a slide show, Q & A, and Autograph signing with some of the creatures of the film. Not knowing what the filmmakers looked like I started off taking pictures of people in the lobby. I was looking for kids and people who were dressed up to take some atmosphere pictures. The kids were adorable in their Indiana Jones costumes. After looking through my pictures I noticed someone who looked familiar. After getting home and downloading my pictures I noticed I had two shots of a father and young son. I realized it was Sean Penn. I knew that I had a decision to make. After another sleepless night, I decided to live by my rule, and not submit pictures of kids that are not walking a Red Carpet. After all, my ultimate goal is to work with actors and not piss them off. Turned out to be a good decision. After speaking with someone at the Institute the next day, I knew I made the right choice. When it comes down to it , I’m a celebrity event Photographer. “Johnny Paparazzi”, is a character in my screenplay “Wilshire Mafia” not me.

Thanks for joining me for Part 1 of 34th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival. My next Blog, will include “My Week with Marilyn” (with the films director), Ezra Miller, Elizabeth Olsen Spotlights, and the World Premiere of “A Few Best Men”.

“Moneyball” Premiere at the Paramount Theater – Oakland, CA 9/19/2011

Greetings everyone and welcome to this edition of “The Outsiders Guide to the Inside of Hollywood”. This Blog, is all about my experiences with the film “Moneyball”. Which will include my day on the set as an extra,  “Moneyball Day” at the A’s ballpark, and the premiere of the film in at the historic Paramount TheaterOakland.

On July 27, 2011, I did something I thought I’d never do again. After over a decade in retirement from acting, I spent the day on the set of Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball” film as an extra. It was a real long day moving from one part of the stadium to the other. The scenes I were in mainly were just crowd shots, so if you see a guy in an A’s hat that’s me. LOL. About four hours into the screening a shadow figure started to approach the field. Next thing you heard were the female extras screaming as loud as a fire engine. As the person came closer you could see it was Brad Pitt. Brad waved and smiled to the stands of extras, as he exited the stadium by Centerfield. After the shoot was done, I thought to myself how cool would it be if they had the premiere in Oakland.

“Moneyball Day” at O.co Coliseum – Oakland Athletics v. s. Detroit Tigers 9/18/2011

The day before the premiere the 2011 Oakland A’s, had a “Moneyball Day” at the O.co Coliseum prior to the game against the Detroit Tigers. The first 10,000 fans got “Moneyball” T-shirts. Attending were film stars Jonah Hill, Stephen Bishop, and Casey Bond. The actors warmed up on the field prior to Hill throwing out the first of the game.

Moneyball Premiere Paramount Theatre of the Arts Oakland, CA 9/19/2011

After waiting for over a year and keeping track of all the news about the film, I finally found out by way of a contest that “Moneyball”, would be premiering, in Oakland in September. Fearing a million bay area photographers trying to get credentials, I decided to let my agency book it for me. My first response back from my agency said there was no information  on it. However, shortly later my agent did receive a email back saying it was happening just too early for RSVP’s.

Finally, after waiting and waiting two days before the premiere, I got my confirmation. I got to the Paramount Theatre of the Arts, and saw in the back of the theater’s parking lot a green and down carpet looking like a baseball field. There were a line of fans across the street ,some waiting since early in the morning. As the other photographers started to arrive I noticed some familiar faces from LA. I also noticed a large group of Asian press who flew in from over seas. A couple of LA photographers approached me and talked about the drive up. They started to call names off. As usual I was at the way bottom of the list. I managed to find a space towards the front of the carpet in the second row on a bench. I had to set up a step ladder on the bench, so I could shoot over the other photographers who were obstructing my view.  Now the waiting begins.

The carpet opened with the normaL, “Who are you”, crop of actors and models? Since we were not in LA we only had a few of those’s people. The first person whom I recognized was sports supper Agent Scott Boras and his wife. Stephen Bishop, and Casey Bond looked great. The first ball player I saw was 2002 Oakland A’s member David Justice and his wife. Justice whom has been on carpets before still had a child like face as he waved to the fans across the street. The next ball player to arrive was current A’s member Hideki Matsui. He smiled and seemed to be interested in the surroundings around him. A number of the photographers tried to give him instructions of where to stand. I had to tell a couple of photographers in front of me that he doesn’t speak much English.

Oscar Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was the first of the main stars to arrive, wearing a blue sweater, causally made his way to the carpet. When he got to my area he took out his Iphone and took a picture of the photographers. Jonah Hill arrived showing off his new look after loosing serval pounds. One of the most popular arrivals was not an actor or a baseball player. Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, Flight 1549 ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ pilot and his wife were greeted by others on the carpet.

At this point we are wondering where Brad Pitt, the director or Billy Beane was. A sound of screams erupted from the fan area across the street. Brad had arrived solo and started to walk and sign autographs in the fan area. Brad finally made he entrance to the carpet, but went around the back. Realizing he was doing some cast pictures I snapped away for some candids. Some of the photographers almost had a stroke thinking he wasn’t coming back. He of course did and moved quickly down the line before doing TV interviews with Videographers.  We then asked a PR person about the director and Billy Beane. We were told they were here in the beginning. No one slated or introduced him and the director. Not sure what happened there but not even Wireimage who was on the carpet with the stars got him. Everyone started to leave. But as always I’m the last to go.

A few minutes passed and would you know Brad comes back with the director Bennett Miller to do some pictures with the studio. I snapped some more pictures as Brad entered into the theatre. At this point everyone is inside or picking up their equipment. There is just one photographer and I left. A security guy then comes over and tells us we can go on and take pictures of the carpet now. So two middle aged men ended up playing on the carpet and taking pictures of each other. Just before we were going to leave actor Reed Thompson, who plays a younger version of Pitt’s character” Billy Beane”, came out and we ended up taking pictures with him.

In the end, it was great for the city of Oakland to have the premiere. I was told by many, that this was the biggest thing to happen to the city in a while. Fans loved their A’s and the excitement of the premiere made everyone reflect back on that magical season. Catch the film in theaters now. http://www.fandango.com/moneyball_136677/movieoverview

1st Annual Sonoma Country Music Barbecue with Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, and Thompson Square, Pete Stringfellow, and McKenna Faith Blog and Review

I got an email from the Harmony Festival Inc. asking if I wanted to cover the inaugural concert celebrating Santa Rosa’s first “Country Music Barbecue” festival with Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, and Thompson Square, Pete Stringfellow, and McKenna Faith. I must admit I’m not a huge country fan but felt it was important to open up to all kinds of music and photography opportunities. I researched the artist and sampled some of their music. I’ve always been a fan of live music and have so much respect for artists who can get up on a stage. Being a writer it really helps me support an artist when they write their own material.

I arrived to the event to see huge lines of people waiting to get inside the gates. Luckily today I not only had a media pass but had a VIP Pass, so I was able to get right in and start taking atmosphere shots of the Fairgrounds. We were greeted by girls in Cowboy Hats and blue jeans. from Country radio station Froggy 92.9 who sponsored the event. The layout was similar to the day before. There were various booths set up with everything from barbecue to souvenirs. I walked the grounds and started heading to the stage. The crowd entering the Sonoma County Fairgrounds was made up of all ages. I saw more people in baseball caps than cowboy hats. There were families, boyfriend- girlfriends, and friends with their blankets and signs.

The show began with a set from Ukiah, California artist McKenna Faith, who recorded “Sugar and Spice,” her debut 10-song CD, in Nashville last October. She had an amazing amount of energy and her deep soulful voice made her seem years beyond her. You can definitely see how some of the modern country stars who influenced her, but still brings a new and refreshing sound to her music. McKenna set was followed by sets by Pete Stringfellow, and Thompson Square. Stringfellow,  another California native signed autographs and  even signed a pair of Cowboy Boots for fans.Thompson Square arrived just in time after a flight delay and delighted the crowd with some of their favorites. This husband and wife combo obviously had great chemistry together, and also delighted the crowd with covers.

The next act  Luke Bryan , is someone I feel could be the next major male country star for years to come. Out of the 7,500 fans in attendance I saw more of his fans than any of the others combined. Luke Bryan’s latest CD ‘Tailgates and Tanlines’ Debuted at Number 1 Country Album charts and number 2 on the Top 200 chart. Number are great but it’s the live show that will tell the longevity of a career. The front of the stage area was full of female Luke fans. One of them went as far as writing a marriage proposal with a sharpie on her arm. Luke hit the stage with full force and had everyone singing along. He was a really good showman and had great stage presence. His set featured songs from his debut CD “I’ll Stay Me” along with songs from ‘Tailgates and Tanlines’.Top selling country singer Dierks Bentley, closed out the festival with another crowd pleasing set.

The event was really fun to attend and to photograph. The only downside was not being able to photograph the meet and greets with the artists. I was was permitted to shoot 2 songs  from the front stage area (photography pit ), but having access to that area made it all worth while. Most concert shoots are from the soundboard which is usually in the back of the floor far  away from the stage. One thing this event proved, was that country music has a home in the wine country. Next week I’ll be heading off to Los Angeles, where I will be photographing Janet Jackson at the Greek Theatre.

My Musical Music Barbecue Weekend

Greetings everyone and welcome to this month ‘s edition of “The Outsiders Guide to the Inside of Hollywood.” Just over a week ago I attended two very different radio station Barbecue’s in Northern California. One was a classic rock festival with performances by Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick and Fuel.  The following day I covered for PR Photos The “‎1st Annual Sonoma Country Music Barbecue with Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, and Thompson Square, Pete Stringfellow, and McKenna Faith”. Both shows were all day festivals and though they compared in some areas, in others they were two different experiences.

107.7 The Bone first annual ”Bonehead BBQ” at Fort Mason’s Great Meadow with Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick and Fuel 8/21/2011

The first thing I notice about the Fort Mason area was what a beautiful place it was for a show. Located just off Marina by the bay in San Francisco. I arrived to the event early and purchased at ticket at the door. Since I didn’t have credentials I got as close as I could to the stage. The area was set up with everything from merchandise booths to several different food stands with some of the best barbecue from several different area restaurants. The show started with a local group called “The Hooks” and were then followed by Fuel. Though I wasn’t familiar with any of their music they both put on energy filled sets.

I walked around and checked out the festivals booths. Things were really well set up and it didn’t feel overcrowded. I was able to get a good sense of the crowd. The majority of people seemed to be Stone Temple Pilots and Cheap Trick fans. So naturally the crowd was a little older but many brought their teen age kids with them. The radio station was broadcasting live from the event. I ended up getting some atmosphere pictures along with photos one one of the DJ’s Nikki Blakk interacting with fans. I love photographing from a fans perspective, where you get more real expressions with that.

Cheap Trick took the stage with a mix of their own music playing. This was going to be an interesting experience. I was not to familiar with their music besides some of their radio tunes. I was interested in seeing what their live show was like. I know many bands that I’ve seen over the years were influenced by their music.  They hit the stage dressed like they did in the 70’s and played about an hour. I’ll have to say it was entertaining but still am trying to understand their popularity. At times they reminded me of a cover band. The crowd seemed to love them as they played some of their favorites. The band however did not do an encore or play one of their biggest hits “The Flame”. Still the crowd seemed to eat up every bit of their 60 minute set.

60 minutes later I was still waiting for Stone Temple Pilots to hit the stage. During this time I started to reflect on some of STP’s past performances I’ve seen. My first thought was how glad I was to see Scott Weiland alive. I’ve sen him at his lowest. In September 2000 I attended a Red Hot Chili Pepper / Stone Temple Pilots show in Irvine, CA. What was supposed to be a double bill tour was over after the second night. Both singers would be in rehab with in days.  My next “STP” show was their reunion tour  in 2008 at the Hollywood Bowl. This marked the rebirth of STP. They put on an amazing show. Scott looked sober and happy. “We’ve been doing this for seventeen years, and to play this venue… There are maybe five things in your life you remember, this is one of them…” said an overwhelmed Weiland between songs.

After almost a 90 minute wait between set breaks STP finally hit the stage. Once again, Scott looked great. I almost thought some college professor was on stage as he was dressed in a sweater and button down dress shirt. The band sounded as tight as ever. Playing almost all of their greatest hits along with new songs. The band clearly had the energy and the showmanship that made them one of the top live acts in the 90’s. Scott looked happy and healthy and the band sounded amazing. Scott stopped several times to say what a beautiful place to play at. After the show ended a DJ came on stage and talked about how STP was one of the only classic rock bands left. I thought to myself that wouldn’t be true if more people came out and supported rock music shows and festivals.
